To Ray:
Does capital punishment really deter murder or any other crime?

I know that's what it should do. But, does it?

Go check the murder rate for countries that don't have the death penalty... and check the murder rate for the US which does have the death penalty. I haven't checked it, but I am certain that the rate is either lower or the same, but NOT higher than the US.

Better yet, go check Canada's crime rate compared to the US. Canada is almost the same culturally as the US, but their crime rates are considerably lower. Their punishment guidelines are also very lax compared to the US... and they don't have the death penalty.

What does that tell us? It tells us that capital punishment doesn't make a difference in deterring criminals from committing murders. So, why keep the death penalty? It doesn't work.

An argument people can make is that it is retribution for murderers. But, like I said, I don't believe in an eye for an eye. If that's what you believe, then so be it. We won't agree on that. I believe capital punishment is a form of premeditated murder. The government doesn't allow people to murder, why should they be allowed to do it?

Okay. Let's be done with this now.

To Vicki:
You're going to be a cop and you've never heard of a minimum security prison? It's where the non-violent offenders go.

Witnesses can be coached into saying anything. Didn't you learn that in police school? Don't they tell you to watch what kind of language you use when you interrogate a witness? so you don't lead them into any answers?

Photo lineups and physical lineups can be flawed too. Just a simple suggestion from a police officer can sway a person into saying that the perpetrator is in the lineup even if he isn't.

In stressful situations, people can't be counted on to remember every detail about what happened at a crime scene. Did you learn that?

What happened in HS is what happened in HS. I was a dumb kid. I'm an adult now.

I actually never spoke to Sarah in MS. I probably said a total of one word to her in the 3 years in MS. I met her in San Diego.

Also, self-defense is a totally different story. If you kill someone in self-defense, I don't have a problem with it. If you kill someone after they've been to trial, and are already "caught," then it becomes revenge. I don't agree with revenge or an eye for an eye.

To Allan:
The US should play by the rules simply because we are the most powerful nation in the world. We set an example for the rest of the world. We can't bring ourselves to the level of backwards nations, can we?

I agreed with attacking Afghanistan. They held terrorists that had just bombed America and refused to give them up or cooperate with the US. Iraq posed no immediate threat to anyone.

It doesn't matter at all if you're in the military or not. But, it seems like you are using your military service as something to give you more credibility.

I was honorably discharged early from the military. But, I still have veteran status.

Props to all the guys in the miltary that risk their lives.. also props to all the guys who exchange videos of Iraqi's being "turned into red mist." That's some honorable stuff.

I see with my own eyes that the US illegally invade other countries. I think you should do a little bit more research about why you went to war than to blindly listen to everything the Marines have been putting into your head. The United States violated international law, specifically the UN charter, and the Constitution to go to war with Iraq.

Don't give me any 'holier than thou' crap just because you're in the military. I'm a Navy veteran myself. How do you think I met Sarah in San Diego? I definately wasn't there for school.

If someone killed my father, and the US criminal justice system found him guilty, I STILL wouldn't know for sure if this guy actually did kill my father. Because of that, I still wouldn't want the death penalty for him.

The only way I know for sure if it happened is if I saw it with my own eyes.. and if I were there to see it with my own eyes, nothing would ever happen to my father or anyone I loved.

I know it's not OK to steal... and I don't do it. Most of us DON'T "still do it." So, speak for yourself in that case.

Breaking out of jail is extremely rare. How many times have you heard of someone breaking out of a maximum security prison? or even a minimum security prison?

Why don't you focus instead on the hundreds of people who are wrongfully executed? What if you kill a man who is innocent, and the man who actually committed the crime is still out committing more crimes?

Personally, I'm more mad that my tax money goes to paying the military to illegally invade other countries when instead they could lower my tuition.

I don't believe in the death penalty.

The US is one of the few civilized, modern countries that still practice capital punishment. It is a product of medieval times that has no place in the world today.

The US justice system is flawed. Too many innocent people are convicted of crimes they didn't do. If the police want someone to be guilty, they will be.

The death penalty has never been shown to deter crime more than any other punishment. Everyone knows it's not OK to kill a cop. Using David Hill, or anyone else, as an example won't make the next guy who wants to kill a cop not do it.

All this -- revenge, an eye for an eye, he did this so he deserves that -- is juvenile and oversimplistic. It's the reason why America A-Bombed Japan needlessly in WW2, and so on. David Hill, if he did commit the crime, should be locked up for life.. not so much to punish him, but moreso to protect people from him. That's what it's all about, right? To protect citizens from criminals... not to seek revenge.

Keep taking an eye for an eye.. make the whole world blind.
